Heritage – Vecchio Asilo
In 1232, the wealthy Mangeri family of San Gimignano built a prestigious home on the highest hill in the village of Ulignano.
In October 1936, Count Paolo Guicciardini transformed this tower house into a nursery school in memory of his son Luigi Guicciardini, who had passed away at the age of 13.
The nursery was run by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Antignano (LI), and all of its facilities, including staff and management, were provided by the Guicciardini Farm in Cusona.
The building not only housed the nursery but also included a workshop for women’s crafts, such as sewing, embroidery, and decoration, and served as a true vocational training school.
It also housed a medical and surgical clinic for the residents of the Borgo di Ulignano.
Over the years, it was transformed into a historic hotel, and in 2020 it was purchased and renovated by the Giachi family, owners of wineries throughout Tuscany, including the Tenuta Torciano winery, the Altezza winery in San Gimignano, the San Quirico winery, the PoggioMoreto winery in Scansano, and others with vineyards that produce the most famous Tuscan wines and olive oils.
Today, at the helm of the Hotel Torciano Vecchio Asilo is Emanuele Giachi, Director and CEO of Flytowine, who has successfully preserved the timeless traditional Tuscan flavor with modern technology.

This new spiral vineyard is capable of combining production with aesthetics and tradition, which has become an attraction for the most “obsessed with discovery”. It is a harmonious succession of rows of vines arranged in a circle spiral, in a movement interspersed with a central stone island, as a panoramic point to enjoy this spectacle of nature.
In particular, you can appreciate the ancient Vernaccia di San Gimignano vineyard, still planted under the management of Romano Giachi in 1996, from which the name of the homonymous wine “Poggioaicieli” originates, one of the most famous wines of the area; it is one of the vineyards dedicated to the Vernaccia di San Gimignano grape with an exposure facing South and South East. Do not miss a visit to the Sangiovese vineyard.
